I see this brand in 1940s but this looks way earlier to me.
Reminds me of something Liza D. of Better Dresses Vintage would sashay around in and why I picked it up.
It is felt with velvet bow.
It is lightened to show design but deep black.
I believe pretty good hat. I just pick hats up as I love them.

Thanks for any help. Sandy

Oops. I was just going to paste that link as I had just found it. Looks so much earlier to me.
Thank you and I apologize. Sandy

Yes, I agree with 1940s. I think perhaps the crown is not meant to be popped up the way you show it, it looks odd that way (but I am not 100% sure). To help pinpoint the dating, can you determine if the hat is made of wool felt, or is it fur-felt? It could be a tad earlier, say 1938-1940, but I cannot tell for sure from the photos and am also not recalling right now when Howie started putting that address on his label.

There was a revival of late Victorian era millinery styles (think of Renoir paintings) in the very late 1930s, which may account for your thinking the hat was older. Hodge was a master at those Bustle Era beauties.

It is a nice hat!

I don't think the crown can go down. It is divided and I would have to push it down hard. I will try to get a photo of inside for you. Lightened a lot.
What would a Victorian with high crown be called?
I think Amish when I see this hat or similar.

The brim has like a stuffed roll. How does one tell a wool from fur felt?

Hi,

I did not know the hat had an open crown as you show in the latest photo. Try gently folding down the front of the crown, instead of sticking up the way it is in your 1st photo in your 1st post. Does that work? Just a suggestion to try, as it would give the hat a more graceful line.

There is no specific name for a high crowned Victorian hat. The thing about your lovely hat that makes it have a Victorian appeal is the trimming, that large back bow, not the shape of the hat itself.

If it is wool, then that is more of a WWII years material for Hodge.
