Hat question

I have this black hat with the back head strap, flowers both above and below the brim:

The inside is not lined, but has a grosgrain band, Halle Bros. label.

Is this 30s? 40s?

Thanks,
Lizzie

1938 - 40, I think. The flowers on the side are a nice touch.

Jonathan and I have talked about the different types of back bands, and he felt that the wider ones like this tend to be earlier. The plain little elastic ones, later.

And of course, Halle Bros is a good label.

Oh wow, I have nothing really constructive to say other than I really love that hat! Wowie!

The bands work well to hold a hat on. But they require a hairstyle that is smooth at the back and lays close to head as you can imagine

Lizzie, I can't give you a year, but these bands seem to start 1936 - 7? Post-cloche as it were. They are primarily functional - keeping a wide variety styles on the head without pins.

They are a good way to date hats. There was a Victorian revival in hats in the late 30s and 40s, and these bands tell you easily it's not Victorian. You never see them prior to the later 30s, and they disappear for the 50s styles.

That's very good information to know. Like i say, I veer towards fedora styles, but you never know what one will come acrossed....
