Hat veiling ca. 1930?

I was recently given a 1930s chocolate brown hat that I want to wear. However, the silk veiling is gone - there was just a small piece left on the brim - so I looked online for some replacement veiling.

I ordered some from Dolls & Lace, which is a company I'd never dealt with before.

It was advertised as "Chocolate Hat Veiling circa 1930", and it looked fine on the website. I thought it said it was silk, but I can't swear to it, and it has been taken off of the website since I bought it.

I was able to pull a photo from the website, but the description has been removed:

Anyway, it arrived today, and it is very stiff nylon! I'm very disappointed, because it won't work with my hat at all.

My instinct is that this veiling is a lot newer than 1930.

Was nylon veiling used at that time?

And does anyone happen to have any nice silk veiling laying around? ;)

There is something in the lingerie resource on when the various synthetics were introduced, but i can't remember off the top of my head. That mightgive you a clue on when the material came to be.

But when it was used in hats, I do not know.

I went back and edited my post to add a photo.

I forgot to mention, though, that the diamond pattern on this is HUGE. It's more than .5" from point to point. The original veiling I want to replace is much smaller and more delicate.

Thanks for the thought, Chris. I always forget about the VFG resource pages! (doh!)

The lingerie resource says nylon was invented and displayed at the World's Fair in 1939. So if I'm right about this being nylon, the date I was given (ca 1930) is definitely wrong.

Laura, how much do you need? I have some vintage (30s/40s brown net hat veiling) that I can throw in an envelope for you.

I have it packed away, but last I remember it was not stiff

Sue

Thanks, Sue! A half yard should be plenty. Do you think you have that much?

I went back to the Dolls & Lace website, and they say they accept returns. So at least I can get my money back.

Laura

Sorry Laura, I came down with some nasty bug and am trying to catch up.

Not sure I have 1/2 yard...will check later this evening and let you know

(if I don't have 1/2 yard, I have close to it)

Sue

Well, I e-mailed the company about returning the veiling, and they initially denied it. They don't accept returns on cut-to-order goods. I e-mailed them back and told them that they didn't cut it to my specifications, because they only had one yard available. If they still refuse the return, I will bring up the point that this is obviously not ca 1930.

Sue, take care of yourself! I had the bug at the beginning of the week, so I know how terrible it is.
