Have you seen this going on on Ebay right now?

I see this in vintage magazines all the time lately....a 2000 McQueen (or any other high end designer) is now considered vintage by the fashion industry. Not necessarily by the vintae fashion world, but we also don't often have clientele paying thousands for a 5 year old gown....

I remember an article a year or two ago where a designer re-represented a gown as an "archive" versus a "vintage" item. I think it made a lot more sense and was a lot less confusing. I wish I could remember what it was but for some reason, a little dark corner of my brain thinks it had to do with a dress Reese Witherspoon wore but I need to shine a bigger light in the back corner of my brain to remember.

I think it's just stupid to call last season's designer wear already "vintage" - that's what one of the top high end boutiques here in Zurich does, so no surprise for me at this comment.

They opened a new boutique about two years ago, that was marked "Vintage" in big letters on the shop windows. Of course I had a look in. It turned out they were just selling off last year's designer duds at somewhat lower prices (but still beyond what a normal person could afford), which they of course couldn't sell at their main boutique anymore. I asked the sales person why they were calling this vintage, and told her that vintage usually means something completely different. She didn't get it. But then she didn't seem to anything about the concept of wearing "real" vintage either. :duh2: And it's not like the word "vintage" hasn't made it into the German language too, usually for fashion (or Barbie dolls :scratchchin: ). I would have thought someone who worked in a place like that would know their stuff....

good grief. way to spin what's essentially an outlet shop.

le sigh. i'm afraid you're right, mary. i HATE that the word vintage is being so abused, it's losing its meaning.

Just my thoughts. Coming from the world of Barbie doll collecting (before I really got into vintage clothes), I always took the world seriously. The line got a bit blurred sometimes, no everybody drew it exactly at the same time point, but not even something from the 80s would have been called vintage.
