Hawaiian Clothing

Sorry about the pics, but I was just taking 'quickie' ones...

The leather dress and all of these were found at a recent estate sale. EVERYTHING was really overpriced, until I got to the bedroom. Where all the clothing was really a darn good deal...

I picked up 15 different outfits/dresses

Three were Hawaaian-

This one says "Royal Hawaiian-Honolulu" dry clean only...

I think Rayon, with silk lining of the sleeves and the slit-

This one has a label of "Tiare hawaii", hand wash, 100% cotton, really feels like barkcloth...

And a men's shirt-"Kamehameha" has the coolest King Kamehameha brass buttons:

Any help would really be appreciated...

THANKS!

I want to go shopping with you! What great finds. I love hawaiian clothing. It sells best during the spring and summer. Yes, its a Hawaiian Pake Muu Dress, and rayon puts it in the 40s, and the print is very pretty, looks to be in great condition. Pake Muu is what they are called in Hawaii, like the american moo moo, for casual or leisure wear. Your halter dress looks late 60s, has a hippie flair to it. On your mens shirt, is it cotton or rayon? Also, a couple things you can look for......Is the label a loop label? Meaning its sewn on the sides only. Does the top button have a loop closure rather than a button hole? Do the inside seams lay flat and have a double row of stitching? These are all characteristics of an early shirt. Rayon, it would be 1940s, cotton will make it 50s. Most of the old shirts have wood buttons, actually made from coconut.

Love your 40s shoes too! This is the condition you want to find them in.

You're more than welcome to come saling with me! Warning, though, I'm in MN and it's getting chilly!

I really lucked out on the clothes I bought at that sale...I should have bought some of the other stuff, but I hadn't really planned on going, so I limited myself a bit!

The shoes were at a different sale...I spent about $80 there, the shoes were $2 a pair, but I bought 3 purses, one gorgeous chocolate suede one that paid for everything.

The men's shirt is cotton-and has the loop label. Also has the loop for the top button, and that one DOES look like it's coconut, but the others are neater!

You're right on the money with the halter, I think-the zipper isn't metal.

The Pake Muu is gorgeous, and I am going to list it on a 30 day HIGH BIN with a make offer and see what happens with it.

Thanks so much!

Pake Muu

Aloha,

I am a new member from Hawaii. I did not grow up here and was not familiar with the term Pake Muu. However, Pake means Chinese in Hawaiian.

I did a Google search for Pake Muu, and discovered that:

For informal entertaining, the pake muu featured long, wing-like sleeves based on a Chinese design.

I would certainly say this garment qualifies. This site seems like a very good resource on Hawaiian clothing.

Linn, glad to meet you! Welcome aboard. And your information is appreciated! I'll have to check out the link you gave, as I have quite a few Hawaiian pieces I plan to list early next spring.

Hope we see you here more!
