Help! 1940\'s Dresses, I think.

I apologize for the photos. The camera operator seems to have issues with the color red. :icon_wall: The first photo is a black R & K 1940's, I think. The second has a tag that I haven't been able to find info on, I'm thinking it is custom. Could it be silk taffeta? Any help is sooo appreciated...i.e: fabric, how to describe, to use a manne or not, indoors, outdoors? I am way out of my league here.

Also, it is good to be back. Breast surgery and treatments are behind me, and I am ready to get back on the saddle. :drinkingtoast:

mmmm... well I think you hit it right on? but I am in no position to give the more experienced advice lol..... the first one definitely 40s and I almost get a late 30s early 40s on the second one? Can't waist to see what the real pros have to say :-)

Looks like the silk taffeta I have come across but would have to feel to know for sure. I love this maroon/wine dress !!!! :-) gorgeous

definitely use a mannequin, buyers have NO imagination, I would use outdoors if you don't have a photo area set up because both darker colors will do much better with the natural light, or a nice wall with a big open window behind you. Depends if you want scenery or a plain back drop.

Thank you! If it is sunshine these dresses need, then we in California are not shot on that. In fact it is over 100 degrees today. :sunshine:

The fabric on the second dress shimmers from deep blue to burgandy. Just a beautiful dress. I'll wait for others to jump in as well.

yepper sunny ca...were 100 degree plus dark humid Florida lol... and btw glad you are back and all went well with your surgery!

RK made such cute things back in the day. Some of their later stuff is less cute - but that was def. in the 'cute years'

I agree. What I really love about this dress is that pretty light pink bow across the collar. A D O R A B L E

mannis are SO much better than hanger shots, and your manni looks good. Good lighting will help capture the irridescence of the second one; either indoors against a plain wall, or outdoors, in indirect light, i would suggest.

do you have a close-up shot of the buttons on the first one? they look pretty neat ~

'40s for both - I'm thinking late '40s? The burgundy could be creeping up a little into the '50s but I think it's still safe in the earlier decade.

They're both lovely and should do well for you - I've had a similar RK to the first one, mine was in royal blue and I bought it for myself but sadly it didn't fit. A happy customer was pleased to give it a new home.

I am so lost on pricing, I've been looking around but eBay is a funny little creature and one never knows. These two dresses will go to seeing my mother who is in Colorado in Hospice. Thanks a bunch!

Marty!

Thank you, Marty. Sadly my mother passed away yesterday morning so I didn't get to make the trip. I did however see her 3 weeks ago and it was a wonderful time with her. Lots of laughter and memories I will treasure.

I haven't had the gumption this week to photograph and set up auction on these lovely dresses but I will definitely post when they go up for sale. I haven't a clue what price to either start them at. Like I said, I am so out of my league, being an old hippie gal, the 40's - 50's often stay parked on my clothing rack. :duh2:

Thanks for the tip on Sharkskin, that was my first thought because the dress fabric reminded me of those old men's Sharksin jackets. lol

I wish you the best of luck with your health and quest to visit your mother. The second dress that shimmers from blue to burgundy I would list it as sharkskin, probably rayon. If you have a crinoline slip, photograph it over top of one, for the swing dance crowd. I love the look of sharkskin fabric. Its classy and rich looking and makes a beautiful party dress.

I'm sure the members here would be interested in bidding on your dresses, if you care to tell us your seller name or venue.

P.S. - Red is the hardest color to photograph, so you are not alone.

You are in my thoughts & prayers.

Marty
