Hi Everyone,
Just wondering if
1. this is what is considered 'steel cut' beads?
2. Am I right on 1920s?
3. What is the diff b/w a 'flapper purse' and a 'reticule'?
4. Is there a name for this wavy bead patterning?

Thanks for any help!
Lauren

Lauren,

That is a sweet little purse. It certainly looks like cut steel beads in the photos. These can be hard to date to an exact year or even decade, because many of them, like yours, were home made from published patterns and made to the maker's own taste and style. I suspect it is earlier than 1920s, it looks more 'Teens era to me. But it could be 1920s.

I don't think the pattern has a specific name.

As for the term "Flapper purse", to me that term infers simply that it is a purse made during the accepted Flapper era of the early to late 1920s and could be any style, shape or materials. I am not familiar with using that term to describe a purse as it is far too generic. And certainly they were not called that at the time.

A reticule is a style of purse, pocket or bag that goes back over 200 years. Today it generally is used to describe a Victorian or Edwardian bag but could be used for any time period's purse if it fits the style. As yours does.

Very cute!
