Help dating a Cheongsam

Hi there!

I found this beautiful silk cheongsam at a goodwill - it’s in perfect condition and fully lined, but with no tags or markings so possibly homemade. I really have no idea how to date this. Any help would be so appreciated. I’ve included pictures of the side zipper (ykk) and hems as well. Thank you!

These are very hard to date for me, because the style remained quite similar for decades. That said, your dress is really well made and uses wonderful fabric. Does the slit go all the way up to the thigh or am I seeing things?

Based on the fabric and the use of the zipper, I think your qipao or cheongsam is from the late 1940s. It looks homemade to me. We have discussed this topic a few times - and as Maggie mentioned they are hard to date, but there are some things that you can look at.

This is a previous conversation about dating these wonderful garments - I replied a few times and suggest you check out the website mentioned in Reply 14:

Yes! it's a significant slit on both sides. It's really beautiful and something of this quality is so hard to find at goodwill these days!

Thank you, Linn. I will most definitely check out the thread. I was thinking 1940s t00!

Agree with Barbara: the quality of fabric and finish is really lovely. I think Linn's right on the dating: I see late '40s to '50s mostly based on the fabric which appears to be a lovely silk crepe. Nice find.
