Hi,
could you help me date this dress?

problem is I am not sure what the fabric is, if it is sinthetic or not

it is home made, machine sewn except for the edges of the fabric, which are hand sewn
it is side fastened with press studs
it has shoulder pads

Thanks!

What are the shoulder pads like? small and hard? Can you
show us a pic of the side snaps/studs?

See if you can do a burn test on a couple of threads
to check for fibre content.

I have to confess that I'm abit confused by this dress and further information would help us to date it.

Hi,
I am confused too, that's why thought to ask you guys:-)

I did a burn test (thanks for the link!) and it looks like acrylic according to the chart :-(

Anyway, I have attached some fotos of the shoulder pads, which are soft but indeed small, and of the snaps

thanks alot for any ideas, but I feel kind of disappointed already!

Could it be rayon and not acrylic? It looks like it might be in the photos. I admit to being at a loss as well for dating this. Some elements look quite old, but the style seems newer than those elements....

What is going on at the neckline? Can you show us a close up of that? It's hard for me to see it in the photo.

I do agree it's misterious...

I don't think it is rayon; it burned and melted and left a hard bead; smell was nor burning paper, nor hair, but chemical-like, and when wet it seemed to repel water.

At tthe neck it has some frills, sorry I don't have a better photo as I already sent the dress to cleaning - so I don't have the measurements either

On the belt it has some kind of metal button

Well acrylic points to later rather than earlier.

I'm going to venture that this is late 70s, but it definitely
has an earlier feel to it. The scoop neckline and sleeves
are 70s, however my initial thought was that it was
an earlier dress, revamped along the way. The fabric
rules that out however.

Thanks for posting this.....I love mystery dress posts, they
are fun and informative for all of us.

thanks guys! you are terrific!

After I tested the fabric I thought about late 70s too.

Actually as I bought it for almost nothing at a second-hand shop (where I found amazing dresses from the 60s and 70s for no more than 10 - 15 euros each), I am not *that * dissapointed, it is a good deal after all, but I hoped it was earlier... well, maybe next time :-)
