Hat's are not my strong subject as I still stumble along, while reading & learning their era's. Could someone help date this hat/style/fabric. Is it a called pillbox? And the material that it is made from feels & looks like a fur. It is labeled MABLEY & CAREW CINCINNATTI. I also found the interior rather unique, is there a specific name for it as well
Thank you

Hi,

First, I really really like your hat, especially the huge rhinestone buckle. I cannot tell a great deal from the photos, but my eyes are not what they used to be. It looks to be made of a type of fur felt, one with a long furry nap. These types of long nap felts were made to imitate the look of fur (pelts) and were popular in the very early 1900s and then became popular again in the 1950s through the 1970s. Your hat has a very Edwardian look to it, and I'll bet was inspired by that earlier time, but was made in the 1950s (possibly early 1960s). The buckle on your hat was surely inspired by the antique hats of the Edwardian era, it really looks like a few antique millinery buckles I have. I don't know what you mean when you refer to the interior being unique, can you be more specific? I must be missing something as I only see the reverse side of the felt?

I would not call it a pillbox. The hat does not have an exact style name that comes to mind. Hats can often defy being put inot a specific category, or the names for them change through the years.

But it really is a good one!

Mabley Carew is the department store that sold the hat. Perhaps it was also made in their millinery department, perhaps not.

Hi Barbara & Mary Jane, thank you both kindly for your help. Its hard to explain, the interior seems to have like another hat inside but it isn't to sit on your head. You can see it in the last photo. It is attached, I've never seen it in a hat before. Wow you really know your hats, as myself. I am not there yet, their pretty tricky to me as to their eras. I do have a book its a good one, vintage hats & bonnets 1770 - 1970 by Susan Langley but sometimes its still hard to recognize as they tend to look alike

Hi again! Susan Langley is a long time member on the VFG and has written 2 books on hats, both are wonderful. If you can only have 1 book on hats, I highly recommend Susan's book over any others. I learned a lot from Susan.

I agree the interior of your hat is odd, perhaps the hat was altered in some way to make it sit a certain way on the owner's head. Does the inside circlet of felt (?) appear to be sewn in, or is it part of the entire blocked felt hat? Very strange, from what I can see.

You might call that style a toque. It sits a bit low for a toque, but sort of reminds me of one.

This is looking like a vintage hat, and is very beautiful. I think it is the time we have a thread designated for the sole purpose of dating. It look likes 1990's hat and is good enough, i think it is best for dating purpose somewhat unique and beautiful.

Hi again. If the part of the hat inside is part of the whole blocked felt shape, (not added on as it looks to be) then that fact should also be reflected in the shape of the tip (top of the crown) of the hat. Since I don't have it here to look closer, from what you describe it sounds like the felt took on the exact shape of the wooden hat block. Can you show a close up of the tip of the hat, in particular the top edge of the crown? Does it have a depressed/concave rim there which would coincide with the convex "ring" we see on the interior? Just wondering.
