Help dating a jacket (possibly Edwardian?)

I just acquired this jacket yesterday and need help dating it seeing that I really only know fashions from 1940s and on.

The jacket is velvet, there is boning on the back, front and sides and it has a tiny "fishtail" on the back.

Thanks for any and all help!

Hi,

Oh, the poor dear has seen better days, perhaps was used as a costume or theater piece, but I love the color. It is Victorian, and without seeing it buttoned up and the sleeve silhouette in place, I would say circa early 1880s.

Oh, I know but for $5 I had to pick it up! The velvet is faded in large and 3 buttons are missing but I'm glad that all the stitching is sound. Here is a photo of it buttoned up.
