I need help dating a purple mohair coat.

*the Montaldos label is identical to the one they show on the guild page as from 1939.
ILGWU label in the coat coat has no CIO or AFL mark on it.

* the label in the inside of the lower front says originals by Densie,
It also says dry clean only and the fabric content is given
The guild information says that
Garment Care labels began in 1971 in the USA.
and The USA Textile Products Identifications Act, 1960 mandated the use of fabric content labels.
BUT the Montaldos label is identical to the one they show on the guild page as from 1939.
and, the one shown from the 60s is quite different
any conclusions??
help is appreciated. thanks

Stores used their labels for a very long period of time. And even when they redesigned the label, they continued to use up the old ones until they were gone. So that is not always a definitive clue as to age.
The style of the coat is 1970s (i.e. the fabric, color, lapel cut, the raglan sleeve, wide topstiched edge, and belted coats were also very big then). In this case the style of the coat and the care directions trump the store label.

Hollis;
Thank you so much! I appreciate your help and reasoning! I still have a lot to learn.
one last piece of the puzzle for me - why does the ILGWU label in the coat coat have no CIO or AFL mark on it?could it just
have faded out ?
Thanks again!
Jeanete
