Help dating a vintage velvet kaftan (Indian?)

Can anyone offer a guess as to the age of this kaftan? The material is fairly thick and the construction feels like good quality - so I am confident in saying it's vintage, but I don't have a guess on exact age. It doesn't have any labels. I'm assuming it's Indian based on the style.

These are REALLY hard to date because they don't change significantly for decades. The gold is probably lurex, so its post mid 50s, and I don't think it's Indian - it's further west - Middle East, but I don't know where...

It looks more of a dress than a kaftan to me.

It looks more like a Moroccan djellaba - agree with Jonathan on the not-being Indian, and also hard to date as so traditional. Could be 1970s.. or later?

I thought Moroccan as well. These were popular in the late 60s and 70s. I really like the color and design pattern on your example. Very Hippie era garb.

I wouldn't rule out India -- velvet kurti/kurta and salwar suits wouldn't be out of place in the north. The embroidery, too, looks like dori chain stitching. There's something about the design itself that make me wonder if it's not from a neighboring country in the north, but it might also have just been that artist's taste.
