Hi Everyone,
The label sort of matches a 1950 one in the resource, but I don't know if that's original....it's in a strange place (at the front)...there's an underdress missing I guess....not sure what fabric this is....never seen it before....it's very soft and ethereal and sylphy.....
Thanks for any direction.
Lauren

Hi Laurenm, it looks like a kind of jacquard weave, almost like an upholstery fabric with a bit of velvety pile: does that sound right?

The dress itself looks to be a simple late '50s-early '60s dress. I can't comment on the label except to say that it's similar one in the label resource which is late '50s and that the construction shows signs of either being hand sewn or altered by hand (the first negating the label). It is an odd placement, but labels are sometimes moved.

Is "burn9" a photo of the hem or is the bias binding located somewhere else? If it is the hem I wonder if it's original or an update - how long is the skirt? This will help date it too as the skirts get shorter the closer to the mid '60s they get.

Nicole....it's not quite a velvety, more a slightly raised linen/cotton weave but it has a velvety sheen....sorry that's the best I can do...so ignorant of fabric still....the skirt is 38.5 inches long and that is the hem bias in that photo...so one side of the tape is machine sewn and the other is hand stitched so I guess it has been altered.

I think there's a possibility that this is designed to zip up the front, since the neckline looks odd to me. Are there any bust or waist darts that might indicate that? It would also help to see a picture of the front zipped up. I'm also seeing belt loops so I'm assuming there was a belt or a sash. I agree with Nicole on dating and would call it a day dress or even a house dress.

so, there are two sort of wedged shape pieces on what I thought was the back that give a little 'bust dart' effect....I'll take another photo....but it was the hook and eye at the top that lead me away from that conclusion.....

i'm not sure about the burn out....how would you tell?

On the burn out fabric, does it appear to be a ground with a slightly raised pattern in a different fabric—something like a velvet nap in a pattern raised over a cottony ground?

I think the zipper is the front as well, as that super long length zipper was used for front openings of hostess dresses. It would be quite unusual for a dress of the period to open that far down at the back. The label placement works better at the back neckline as well.
