I am stumped by this coat, and would appreciate any thoughts about age!

It's a red cotton velvet coat, unlined (except for rough cotton lining the top portion of the back and chest). Wide sleeves, with a curved C shape. Wide collar. Closes with black metal hook and eyes down the front. Seams are unfinished and machine sewn. Fur trim is hand sewn on. Cuffs are trimmed with a stiff, fake white fur (looks like the fur on really old stuffed animals). There are stitch marks along the collar and down the front of the coat, so I think it used to have a fur trim that matched the cuffs on those parts.

The back (inside) is stamped Goldstein & Co. Costumers. 989 Market Street San Francisco, Cal
I have tried researching the address and the name, but have been unable to find anything.

I'm guessing this was part of a Santa costume, but am stumped about the age. Thanks!

Hi there,
My mom worked at Goldstein’s making costumes for the San Francisco Opera from 1964 -1965 timeframe (when my dad was overseas in Korea). I remember the shop was on Market Street and after going to the shop, my mom took me nearby to Mannings Cafeteria for lunch. I vaguely remember meeting Mrs. Goldstein — the owner — but I was only 7 or 8 at the time. My mom stayed in touch with one of the seamstresses for many years after that so I think the shop remained open into at least the early 1970s although I could be mistaken.

I’m reasonably sure your jacket was a costume from some opera that they sewed for — makes me wonder if my mom or any of her coworkers might have had a hand in its creation.
