I'm hoping to list this bag on Etsy this weekend but need a bit of help re date. It is rabbit fur (sorry!) with silvertone ornate hardware and a silk lining tho that's now a bit threadbare bless.

This is actually a muff handbag which is so sweet (very comfy!) and that's a mock lock on the top, it's actually a catch so when moved to the side it opens.

Fur or no fur, I'm rather fond of this (I don't know y, I just am!) & so I'd like to know a little more about it.

I thought it was 40s maybe 30s but someone I know said 20s? :help:

Your help as always would be great and I always learn that little extra from your replies ;)

Sarah

ps I made my very first sale on Etsy today & I'm chuffed to bits :cheer:

 thanks for link. I haven't managed to find anything similar to my bag online, well I've seen plenty of muff combi handbags but nothing that has a frame let alone silvertone hardware and carrying handle so a bit stumped really.

I don't know much about fur, but my friend who said it might be 20s also said it was rabbit fur so just took their word for it. It's very very soft, like my cat! Does anyone know that it's probably a different fur?

So if anyone else can help out here, that would be fab! I could sell it as 20s/30s/40s but would rather narrow it down a bit more than that lol!

Yep Karin, I've looked high and low and can't find anything similar. It's very annoying! :powwows:

:help: Is there anyone out there that can help resolve this?

Sarah

Sarah, have you got any photos of the interior? The style doesn't look as old as 20s or 30s but I haven't seen anything like it either - does it have any tags?

Nicole

Hi Nicole,

Here's a pic of the interior which has seen better days! It's the brown fur that's peeking out aroud the inside frame (looks like rust on the photo).

I've also included some clearer photos of the hardware as there is much more going on there & there might be some clues in the joinery/fittings etc, that may give some pointers to those in the know.

There's no label, but I don't know whether the little tab emblem holds any clue, like a back to front S..

With the metal frame it weighs quite a bit!

The bag looks like a lambs wool/sheep combed, though very old so worn and lost its softness.

It looks like it's Edwardian, perhaps even late Victorian and possibly German or Austrian .

very nice.

Wow, thanks for your thoughts on the mystery bag!

So could be lambs wool! It is still super super soft (lovely to stroke, though my cat gets the hump!). It is slightly tufty so could well be! Never thought of that and that would be good, cos its more saleable (as opposed to opposing opinions on fur).

Yes it does seem pretty old and if it is Victorian, Edwardian...how interesting....must do some investigating and delving through those eras then! My gut instinct did suggest European, so at least I might have got one clue right, but only the one!

Thankyou so much!

As I've got the bag, is there any clues I can look for that would indicate that it is indeed lambs wool or fur etc? Also there's is a patch of lining that's totally worn so I can see the underside of the exterior, will that give a clue as well?

Sarah

yes it would look like very thin suede, as its skin, mind you its very old it could even be powdery and decaying, many linings do, but arent always accesible, so goes unnoticed. hth

Yes it is like a thin suede. I've lookd up the fur resource on VFG and was so pleased that it includes lambs wool and how interesting and informative...now I can go and bore the pants off everyone I know! Some of the wool treatments really can look like rabbit and feel like fur, can't they, so it is very confusing for sure. When you mentioned lamb's wool, I immediately thought of the Larry the Lambs in the UK not Central Asian Karakul Lamb lol! I love the VFG resources!

I sent an email to a handbag museum describing the bag and they said they would be interested in seeing photos of which I've sent, so I await their opinion.....
