Hi everyone - I was wondering if anyone could help me put a more exact date on this beautiful bias cut dress I recently acquired.

I was told it was 20s but I'm thinking more 30s now that I've seen it on my model. But the bolero itself looks later to me. The sleeves, if you cant tell, are puffed and sort of fold in on themselves. I have a jacket from the late 30s w/ similar sleeves - I KNOW when it was from b/c the original owner told me when she bought it. :)

Then again, I'm a 40s & 50s gal so as usual... I'm out of my element. Any help would be MOST appreciated. I wanted to list it for 10 days starting tomorrow night. Thanks in advance!

What a lovely set . This is definitely 30's. The color and placement of the stripes on the bias is really stunning. Your modle looks beautiful in it and the juxtaposition against that choclate brown wall really sets it off.(love walls this color anyways!) I predict alot of interest in this beauty!-Lorinda

THanks Lorinda - I really thought 30s as well. I can't believe how amazingly all the stripes match up and even the bolero stripes line up w/ those on the dress!!! If I thought there was a chance in heck I could fit into this I'd be wearing it next week to a tres-chic NYC wedding in the boat house at Central Park. :)

Thanks for noticing my back drop. My sister's house is empty and on the market (she moved to NYC as well) and I've been using it as my studio for the past few weeks - auctions keep going up and up too! I was really careful to put her in that room in that dress - it just all worked so well together!

I have a gold colored satin dress from the same estate I hope to photograph in the same room for next week. Has a small hole in a seam I need to repair first though. :)

Ohhh too bad you can't wear it! It would be perfect for this time of year!!! But then again you wouldn't want to outshine the bride :-) Obviously, your sister has great taste also.....-Lorinda

Hi Anessa, this is definitely too late to help you but I've just been reading about 30s fashions and found out that 1932-33 saw the start of a new trend for striped fabric cut on the bias, which your gorgeous ensemble demonstrates perfectly.

My reference, in case you're interested, is a really useful book by Georgina Howell called 'In Vogue: six decades of fashion.'

It's definitely 30s - the puffed sleeves on the bolero put it a bit later in the period - more 1937ish. Stripes were indeed popular for much of the decade

Thanks ladies! It ended up doing pretty well and the girl who got it loves it! I couldn't be more pleased!
