Help dating dress

Hi all,

I am looking for help dating this dress as well as some good terms to describe the style. Where would you wear it? There are no labels of any kind. The blue overlay is somewhat sheer but a bit stiff like cotton. It closes with a zipper in the back.

Thanks
Victoria

Hi Victoria, yes I agree with Joules, that it is likely to have been made as a theatrical costume-Oklahoma is a good bet. There is also an an outside chance that it was made as a prom dress or for a wedding- I know in the 70's I wore something not that different to this dress to a family wedding when I was a bridesmaid- this look was huge in the 70's- think Laura Ashley etc.
Cheers,
Gayle

Agree with a '70s date: and I'd call it more of an Edwardian revival dress. These romantic styles were very popular for brides and formal occasions. The Prairie/peasant styles were less fancy, and more likely to be printed or plain cotton.

I've sold a few dresses similar to this (a few by JM for Gunne Sax) and used Edwardian revival but I also love Nicole's suggestion of romantic dress. I had an almost identical dress when I was 14 and that was 1992... ok ok, it was 1982.

I love Nicoles suggestion for Edwardian Revival, and yes date wise- the dress I wore as a bridesmaid that was in a similar fashion was late 1970's or very early 1980s from memory, maybe we should exchange photos Rita! ';).

I wore a dress almost identical to this in my cousin's wedding, which was in 1974! Only a different color. So, my recollection is similar to Gayle's. I think "Edwardian Revival" is a good term as well.

You might find, if you look around at the skirt seams, and in between the shell and the lining, a paper batch tag. I'm surprised there's no size tag, but not surprised at no maker's label.....
