Hello,

I have this stunning "Made in Guatelmala handwoven by Indians" jacket. I think it is 1940's does anyone have an opinion? Thank you!

Best,
Sarah

THere certainly was a lot of Central American workmanship, textiles, and inspired prints beginning in the late 1930s (good neighbour policy) and carrying on into the early 1950s. It looks 40s to me -- if for no other reason I don't think 'made by Indians' would appear on a label anytime after 1960ish!

I found a 1953 ad for a Guatemalan jacket. The design is not exactly identical, but the shape seems to be.

The list members here certainly do know their stuff when they date these things without benefit of the ads!

I also found another 1953 ad with a similar jacket and the first two sentences in the ad are: "A successful man is one who earns more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man and keep him."

Ah, the 1950s.

When I saw your beautiful jacket I thought of a South American ad that I have in "Handweaver & Craftsman" magazine , dated Spring of 1954.
You ordered the lengths and colors you wanted, they then made the lengths and sent them to you with an "imported label" it says.

I just noticed that the picture is pretty tiny. I can send a larger one if anyone is interested.
It does also say "Woven by the Mayan Natives of Guatemala"
