hi guys...i need your dating help!!

this coat is by 'lou richie', a canadian designer who stopped prod in the late 1970's...the coat neede extensive repair which makes me think its old, but how old is the question??!!

it is a black velvet with a silk lining. dramatic lapels and exxagerated silhouette.....
there is a union label on the inside. i have heard you discuss these but i dont know what they mean!!

thanks for any info in advance!!

thanks for your thoughts!!:D

the model may not show this but it is very curvy-- a cinched waist, curved bust.... am I wrong in thinking that this silhouette is more early 60's/ forties/fifties??

and what does the union label mean?? does it help with dating??

I've got a lot to learn- just trying to understand it all!!:puzzled:

I'm going to put early '70s on the coat, because of the lapels...and I wonder if it's been shortened. Is that the original hem? It looks a bit out of proportion.

Do you have a clearer pic of the union label? That can help date it, we need to see the number - you can look it up here

The style is reminiscent of the late '30s and '40s.

to compare your union label... I htink this is the pre 64 label... but its so blurry because pre 64 and post 64 are very similar.... but the pointy wide collar is more of very late 60s and into the 70s

from what I have learned :-) woohoo I have input .....

but do nbot be discouraged because of your union label picture... though blurry leaves me to question that!!!! please let us see a clearer pic!

I'm going with early 70s--those huge lapels are very typical of the period. While the style may be inspired by earlier eras, I don't think the exaggerated size/shape of the lapels on your coat were made in any other time but the early 70s.... Even the 50's big lapels weren't that big! It's a darling coat, and these can do very well.

Thanks sooo much everyone!! :adore:

jluthye's image matches my label(i think)....by the way, there are letters on the back- what are these for??

I love this coat so I will be keeping it!! :D
