Here are a two clues to dating vintage ties that a lot of people don't know.

1930s and before - ties are generally unlined (not always but mostly)

The earlier the tie the shorter the length tends to be - For example if you come across a skinny tie that looks 60s but is in the 58" - 59" range it's probably a retro 1980s ties. 1920s and 1930s ties are quite short as a rule, well under 50". I hesitate to give definative lengths because they do range but shorter usually means earlier.
