I'm thinking earlier; can you turn the collar down around the neck, and pull the front forward? the waist is sitting too high at the moment so it's disguising the true shape.

It's probably a dressing gown, not a nightgown, and as Melanie says, if you can turn down the collar and re-fasten the ties so that it lays more naturally, it'll be easier to tell. I, too, think it may be earlier--mid to late 30s, or in to the early 40s--but the lines of it the way you've shown it make it harder to tell.

Lauren, it's always a good idea to check our resources, as they are a wealth of information and often can answer this type of question. Our Lingerie guide has a nice explanation of a dressing gown: http://vintagefashionguild.org/lingerie-guide/dressing-gown-negligee-peignoir/

Sorry, because I wasn't sure if it was a dress or lingerie I didn't consider the resources outside of the pinked seams info.
Sometimes hard to know where to narrow something when you haven't' seen anything like it before....relative newbie that I am and then of course when things are really well made and unscathed by time, I wonder if it's some re;lica or adapted use/trend based on earlier fashions etc....
Now that I read the resources, it clearly is a dressing gown with that shawl collar.
Thanks for the help.

I love dressing gowns but I haven't seen one like this, that doesn't have a front opening - can I ask you some more questions LaurenM?

Where are the openings? Is there only the front button? Are there any shoulder pads or evidence of them being removed? What is the fabric?

I'd like to see this garment pressed, and with the shawl collar down and the button undone. I'd like to know if the button is original or if it's been added?

I wonder if this started as a dressing gown but someone added the button to turn it into a dress? The button pulls the bodice out of wack.

Lovely faggotting detailing.
