Hi everyone! I have this 2 piece blouse & skirt set that I believe to be home sewn (my sister investigated the seams and thinks it was a home made set). Do you have any input as to what the era might be? The front of the blouse is a button closure, the skirt has a gently elasticized waist, and there is a unique "bow" on the back of the neckline of the blouse. There are no labels of any kind, further leading us to believe it was home sewn. The body of the fabric has a really beautiful metallic shimmer thread throughout. If anyone can offer any insight, that would be great! I'd also appreciate knowing if there is a specific term for this type of fabric, and also the unique bow on the back of the neck. Thank you!!

The top is on back to front - this is a classic '60s evening set, and looks commercially made. Overlocking wasn't available to the home seamstress at this time. The bow tie is at the front, with (as Melanie pointed out) the buttons down the back. It was probably made by a professional dressmaker for an event.

Team Sparkle Vintage, it's a common mistake - '30s dresses are similar in that whenever you get back detailing (or a low back) we're conditioned to think that's the front. The give away is that the front will generally have bust shaping. You can also tell if there's a side opening (almost always on the left) and where the labels are (if any). Also where the shoulders sit, and the sleeve seams (if any).

There are a lot of little details to pick up! If in doubt, put it on one way, and then the other and see which sits best. Back buttons were pretty popular in the early to mid '60s.

Very pretty. I'm also in agreement with the 60's. Usually, the fabric is referred to as metallic, but it is also known as Lurex which is an actual brand of metallic thread. At least that's how I've always understood it. Some garments are 100% metallic while others are a blend of metallic with other fibers. I have several metallic items in my shop right now. It's so sparkley and pretty .

Thank you!! Okay, so 60s seems to be the general census...I agree with you Amber, I love this fabric too-so pretty and multidimensional IRL!! Thanks everyone :)!
