Help Dating This Tailcoat

Not too familiar with mens formal wear. This is a tailcoat by Moss Bros Covent Garden. If memory serves me correctly, Moss Bros was a shop in London's Covent Gardens;they have a long history dating back to 1848 or something like that.

Anyway, I found this tailcoat and I love it. I am contemplating keeping it for myself as I love to wear them with jeans. This one is really small, probaby a boys size. Its navy blue wool. The top half of the collar is velvet. The label pictured is the only label in the coat. 50s?

It's a dressage shadbelly jacket worn for the higher levels of dressage (higher levels than what I show at! LOL!). Probably a women's one due to the size. Moss Bros has been riding clothes for years and still does. This is a modern one, probably made within the last 10- 20 years.

thanks..are u saying mine is a newer one, or the one pictured? the one u posted looks very modern yes.. :-)

AND made for the British market as velvet collars aren't popular on riding jackets (not since the 70's but this jacket isn't that old) but have always been here.

The photo is just an example of what a dressage shadbelly looks like when worn with breeches and a show shirt so you can put it in context :)

Your's isn't vintage but probably made within the late 10- 20 years as Moss Bros still makes riding clothes.

If you decide to sell it, then you should do well with it as shads cost a fortune! Especially Moss Bros stuff. Yours is nicer than the German Pikeur one in the big photo too. The Moss Bros one would have been made for the rider, Pikeur is off the peg.

Well, I sell some of my items at Market Publique, and they permit 90s items. I wish I could narrow it down to be sure..thanks for all of the info. You learn something new everyday. I did not know these were highly sought after. I just thought it was cute! haha :-)

Riders are always looking for a bargain and often scour Ebay looking for stuff (I do, that is how I found my side saddle) so if MP doesn't let you put it on there, then I'd put it on Ebay.
