Hello All,

I found a number of older dresses at an estate sale last week. This is the oldest. It is quite yellowed but is so delicate and pretty. I am including a pic of the neckline, which has wire threaded through a ribbon casing. The ribbon has worn away in several places, leaving the exposed wire. Any information that can provide about age, construction technique, etc., would be appreciated.
Thank you!

That is a beautiful dress! Thank you for showing it here. It needs to be on a dress form or mannequin to really see the shape, but from what I can see it dates from the late 'Teens. Maybe 1917-1918. It could be later but as it is on a hanger, I am not sure where the waistline would sit on a real woman, or how full the skirt is. Silk wrapped wire and linen wrapped wire was used for collar ruffs, millinery and other dressmaking effects where support was needed for delicate laces and fabrics, or to make the fabrics stand up or keep the desired shape.

The floral embroidery on the lace is fabulous! What a great find you have.

Thank you Barbara! I am going to try very carefully to put it on my dress form and I will add those pics. I appreciate the information you provided.

I do not see any labels. I did take a pic on the dress form. I included a pic of the back which shows the under layer which has snaps, and I included a pic of the under layer skirt as well as the inside at the waist, and a close up of the embroidery.
