First time posting here! I have this coat, the material is woven and sort of stiff. It's just gorgeous and in amazing shape, I'm just having a hard time dating it to determine it's value. I tried to capture the details and texture with photos. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! ❤

Hi LoveStreetSalvage, and welcome to the forums. Lovely coat: do you have any more photos? It would be helpful to see (and read a description of) the lining and the back. Preferably right way up as it's easier to see than sideways.

Can you tell us more about the fabric composition (wool, cotton?) and construction? The buttons don't look that old but if you can tell us more about what they're made of it will help. Photos are inherently limited.

We can't help you with value as per the forum rules but we can help you date it.

I'm sorry about the photos being sideways, I just took them directly from here and there was no option that I saw to rotate them... The fabric on the outside is woven and feels like some sort of soft straw... it sounds weird but it could even be some kind of hair! It has hip pockets on both sides, unlined. The inside feels like satin and has a waist tie. The buttons are a clear plastic (maybe Lucite?) and the little medallion inside is some type of metal, maybe aluminum. There are no tags or marks of any kind. I'll try to attach some more pics and look again for option to rotate, thanks! (First photo is underside of fabric and some of the construction, still don't see an option to rotate pictures, sorry)

Thanks for the extra pics - lucite is a fancy word for clear plastic, so yes, they're lucite. You haven't mentioned if there are shoulder pads? There should be so if you can tell us how big they are, it will help.

Wish I could help on the fabric, you can see it's quality but I can't think of anything like straw, sorry. Satin lining is probably rayon.

If you put the collar down I think you will see that it is late '40s, with the key design elements of double-breasted, those lucite buttons, black satin lining, turned back cuffs, square shoulder line, small square collar.

Thanks so much for your help! There are no shoulder pads inside. The collar does seem like it wants to stand up on it's own... does the fact that there are no shoulder pads change anything? The fabric is so interesting, it's kind of shiny and soft but sounds like straw when it moves and is sort of stiff.

It certainly is an unusual fabric. The actual fabric reminds me of some Victorian pieces I have had. I wonder if someone found some victorian fabric and made this coat from it? It's really difficult just from the photos to know. I am seeing more of an early 60s styled evening coat.

I also think this is a 1960s evening coat - I always find those sheer covered snaps on nicer 60s pieces for some reason. I also think it is upholstery fabric because I have a piece here from some 1960s curtains in a more recognisably 60s print, but the texture and technique is the same.
