help dating vintage hat--1940s?

I need help with this hat. I got it from an estate that had hats from the 1940s-1960s. My gut says 40s based on the coloring/materials, but I want to get a second opinion from someone who knows hats better than I do. :)

It's less of a hat and more of a decorated snood (the wearer's hair would have filled the net). I agree it looks 1940's but these creations which are simple pieces put together are hard to date because it could have been at any time from bits to hand - I know I've seen those berry decorations on 50's hat before for example, but I think they were in use both decades.

Melanie, thanks. Is this a snood if it doesn't "gather" the way a snood usually does? It lays flat and doesn't seem to be shaped to encircle hair. Or would it be pinned or have something to gather it?

Snood's aren't shaped as such, they just have one open end and one closed end, as yours does. They generally only hold the hair from the ears down so yes it would be secured with pins.

I'm not explaining myself very clearly--sorry about this! I know what a snood is, but my hat doesn't have a "closed end" like a snood normally does (it might be hard to see this in the pics). That's why I'm saying this hat lies flat and doesn't gather.

To me, it looks like home made thing, a "whimsie" for putting over a teased up hair style, or chignon/bun hair do. I agree it is really not a hat, per se, but does fall into the millinery category. Those little glass berries started to appear on hats in the early 1950s, but they might have been around in the later 1940s. They can be blown glass, or thin hollow plastic. The thicker looking cage veiling, the glass berries, and style all look 1950s to me. While I agree the chartreuse color was a popular 1940s hue, and the ribbon may be left over from the 1940s, the whimsie itself looks late 1950s to 1960s time period.

Very cute!

Melanie, the picture is deceiving--it looks closed in the first photo, but it's not.

Barbara, thanks for the clarification and information. The color/materials felt earlier to me, but I wasn't sure if this was a style of hat (or headpiece) that was seen in the 1940s--hence, my post on here! I always learn new things from your responses to my millinery posts!
