Hello! I am new here so I hope I'm doing this right! I was hoping someone could help me I.D. which designer this 1950's women's black dress blazer is made by!? It's beautifully tailored with sort of a scalloped design on collar and pockets. (In photo the flash made it look faded, it's actually a rich black wool! You can better see in the pocket photo.) 5 fabric covered rounded buttons down the front, darting in the waist, slight shoulder pads, a silk interior and has absolutely no holes or rips. It's in fantastic condition so I'm assuming this was a very expensive and well made piece for it's time! There are 3 labels: a union label, a "Forstmann" label (I know who that is!) and the one that just says "Herbert" which has me stumped! Which Herbert is it? On the tag that says Herbert also says "Designer - Herbert -San Francisco - Tailored". With some research, I was thinking maybe Hebert Sondheim (?) but he was from New York. Maybe Jonny Herbert? But none of their labels ever have just "Herbert", or in this red cursive font. Help! Can someone please help me I.D. which Herbert this coat is made by?! Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I have been searching--and will continue to look--for information about the Herbert label, but have not yet found anything very helpful.

I found at least two 1954 ads for Herbert suits, a ca. 1955 San Francisco directory entry for the tailor John Herbert, and a few entries for the San Francisco firm Herbert Coats & Suits, Inc., as below.

I will continue to look for some connection with all of these, but I am leaning toward the assumption that your label belongs to the Herbert Coat & Suit company.

I agree with Lynne - I think you're looking for a San Francisco tailor, rather than a fashion label per se. I would search San Francisco newspaper databases for adverts. I find that job wanted ads can be quite good as they give addresses and indication of the size and scope of a company by the sort of jobs they have going. It also helps with years that they're active.

Thank you so much for the ads and Info! The ads you listed here look very similar to the tailoring and style of my coat, so you're close! This has been very helpful. I have some research to do myself now! Thanks again!
