Does a handwritten style mean these shoes were hand-made to order?
How can I determine the size?
Please see pictures
Thanks for any suggestions & advice.

From what I know - no. I've seen handwritten numbers in mass-produced shoes before if they were 70s or older. Your style looks hard to date though. As for sizing, I find that it is all over the place when I look at size charts. Best to list with clear measurements (inside sole length, width at the ball, heel height) if you want to sell them, and let the buyer compare that with shoes that fit them.

That style with the serrated topline was produced many times - I think the original was done in 1954, but I have a pair from the 70s and they were redone in the 80s and more recently too that I know of. Karin was right, hand written numbers tend to suggest a quality shoe that was hand finished, but the very numbers are a sign that they are made in a production line and not made to order. Made to order footwear is made from start to finish by one or two craftsmen, so you don't have to mark them with a production/design number which is for inventory control ID.
