You guys were such a big help to me last time I had a question. I have just recently started collecting vintage clothing and I'm really stumped on this dress. It looks early 1900 to me...but that doesn't really mean much. It's a very heavy fabric, hand made, with plastic button that have rhinestones in the middle of them. The collar and sleeves are trimmed in a very soft, what appears to be angora blend.

It's in very good shape. There are two tiny holes in the fabric. I guess why I'm stumped is that it look and feels so old, but it has plasitic and rhinestone botton's and a side zipper.... Any help you can give would be awesome. Thanks1

We-ell, if it's got a side zipper it's got to be later than mid-late 30s anyway, and with this style (rhinestone buttons, nipped waist, cuffed 3/4 sleeves), possibly late 40s?

Big pockets like that always makes me think late 40s too, although I think you do get them later.
How long is the skirt? It's a bit tricky to tell.

Have you got a petticoat or something else you could flounce the skirt out with?

Someone else might come along and argue for 50s too - I'll leave it for a consensus to form. :)

Thank you guys so much! The trim does have a pattern, almost like a large houndstooth pattern. I'm at work so I don't have the measurements but the skirt a falls at mid calf range, maybe a little higher. Thanks again!

Nice dress, Venus!

Oh yes..mid calf range it would definitely be too short to be early 1900s/turn of the century unless it has been altered...(i am not an antique clothing expert...but that much i do know.

you can always check if a garment is turn of the century by looking for overlocking. If the garment is overlocked it is going to be around 40's or later.

That a classic 1948 - 1950 New Look dress. Everything is right - the fabric, the side zipper, the plastic buttons, the dolman sleeves and the very full long skirt. It would have been worn over a full petticoat of some kind, most likely net, to give the skirt some lift. And with a pair of very high heeled, round toe pumps.

It's not a very wearable style but it's definetley a beautiful one.

There are many people who are into era re-enactment, etc, even if the style does not directly relate to what is on the runway right now. If you can find a crinoline to put under it to really pouf the skirt out...it will give the dress a different look, too.
