Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some insight into a blouse worn by Gina Rinehart in the early 1980s (photo attached). I’d love to know more details about its possible brand, fabric, and any similar styles from that era.

Blouse Details:

  • Era: Circa 1982
  • Material: Appears to be a lightweight fabric (cotton or silk?)
  • Color: Likely sky-blue (black-and-white photo)
  • Design Features:
    • High neckline with a simple collar
    • Intricate embroidery/appliqué on the front (scalloped edges, possibly floral or fan-shaped)
    • Long sleeves with buttoned cuffs
    • Slightly puffed shoulders (a common trend in the early '80s)
  • Styling: Paired with dark trousers, suggesting it might have been a professional or semi-formal outfit
If anyone recognizes this style or has seen similar blouses from that time, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Any information about possible brands or designers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I can't help with the brand, but this has a vaguely ethnic, vaguely futuristic feel, which was all the rage in the early 80s (I call it "neo-noir/Blade Runner" style). I reverse searched the image and found a higher resolution pic that showed some texture/jacquard weave to the fabric, which was also very popular at the time. This texture/weave can be done in silk and synthetics. The blouse here appears to have a bit less drape than silk to my eye: I had a lovely silk blouse with a similar weave back in the day, and wore it to death! The asymmetry is also a common early 80s 'new wave' sort of detail. I wish I could help you more with the designer. ETA: I found a listing on the Canadian eBay site of a similar blouse that with a beaded asymmetric design with the "Gala" label.
