Help identifying/dating a Colby hat

I found this hat over the weekend at an estate sale, and I've never seen one in this style before. It basically looks like a cylinder of black satin, gathered at the top, and pleated a bit at the bottom. In playing with it on the hat form, I think I came up with the way it's meant to be worn: with the bottom folded up a turn, and then the top slouching over a bit to the side, something like a beanie or knit beret. But I'm not certain I have it right.

The label reads "Colby ADJ." The other Colby hat I've had pass through my hands clearly dated to the 1950s, but I'm having a hard time verifying this one since I can't pin down the style. Any ideas?

Thank you!

i'm hat-challenged, but will say the label and font on it look to be from either the 50s or early 60s.

hopefully one of our hat experts will come along and post their thoughts soon.
