Help identifying the era of these 2 fur coats

Hi everyone! I have these two fur coats which I'm trying to date:

The first is a short black coat, with sewn cuffed sleeves. The sleeves sort of flare out and are more 3/4 length which I thought was very cool! I believe it is mink or sable, it has a very rich black hue and is sheared but some spots are worn slightly red...if anyone has any ideas as to the era, and specifically whether it is mink or sable, I'd truly appreciate it! I'm also trying to learn more about the specific colors of fur, so if anyone can tell me the "official" name for this hue, that would be fantastic too!

The second one has a slightly more modern look but sort of reminds me of the 70s or 80s...there is a drawstring through the waist for cinching. I believe it is natural racoon but I'm not positive. Again, if anyone can help identify the exact type of fur in addition to the era, that would be gerat too, and whether this color has an "official name".

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, I think your first jacket dates to the 50s based on the collar, jacket length/shape, sleeve shape, wide sewn back cuffs, and lining fabric used. I am unable to make out any seam lines within the fur to 100% identify the fur type. I can tell it was dyed black. The fur has oxidized and faded to red in areas as you mentioned over time and the fur type would either be sheared beaver, sheared rabbit, or sheared muskrat.
If whole sheared beaver pelts were used the jacket would be seamless in back due to the large size of beaver pelts.
If whole rabbit pelts were used there would be squared sections that you would be able to see.
If it were sheared muskrat there would be a zig zag pattern where the seams connected throughout.
I lean towards sheared beaver because I don't see any seam lines to identify smaller pelts in the back, the fur does not have the shininess I would expect to see in black sheared rabbit, and sheared muskrat does not fully take to the dying process so some of the furs often appear transparent or white in color after being dyed and I don't see that either. You can use my indicators to more conclusively identify the fur type for certain.
It is not sheared mink which is generally shorter and more compact when sheared and it is not Sable which is never sheared as it is very lightweight and prized in it's natural length.

Your second fur is pieced Raccoon. It's very pretty and looks like it dates to the early 80s. There is no specific name for the color. Raccoons are multi colored with shades of black, gray, white, whitish yellow, and sometimes brown.

Thanks Caryn, I appreciate your in-depth and informative reply!! I think you are definitely correct in it being beaver, I checked closely and it doesn't have any "seams" where the belts were sewn together on the back. Thanks again!!
