Help ID\'ing a 40s Fabric

Hi There - I'm taking the plunge and FINALLY beginning to list some of this vintage clothing I've been collecting to sell for so long! TONIGHT!!! Normally I deal in MCM furniture and smalls but that is my fiancee's great love - mine of course is vintage fashion! I hope to do it on a full time basis in addition to our other findings. :)

Anyway, I've had this dress for some time and am uncertain what material it is. I know it's from the 40s but the material is almost like paper or nylon. VERY light weight and very shimmery. I've been hesitant to list it sice I'm still unsure of the material. Anyway, help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and I hope these photos aren't too large!!!

I'm not sure about the fabric, but I wanted to say that I LOVE LOVE LOVE that novelty print! Buttons, spools of thread, and bows - how perfect!

Well that makes 2 of us then! LOL! Thanks for trying and thanks for the compliments! Here are the pics a bit smaller so they don't get cut off...

I was thinking rayon acetate as well.

Also date wise, with the natural shoulder, sleeve cut in one with the bodice and thet length, I would think more a mid 50s look than a 1940s.

Great novelty print, too - such fresh colors.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! I would love to do a burn test but there's VERY little selvage anywhere on it. I might go over it again and see what I can come up with - but that link is incredible! It is DEFINITELY bookmarked!

Also, Hollis, it's funny you should bring up the age as a few friends and I have had the same discussion about it making arguments for both 40s and 50s. I was sure to include that in the description because I absolutely HATE misjudging things like that!

Anyway, my auctions are up now under the user name BustownModern if anyone wants to see. I'm still new at selling clothing on eBay so if anyone sees any glaring mistakes I'd REALLY appreciate it if you'd let me know! I started out w/ a variety of items hoping to see if I could sort of find my niche...

Here's a sneak peek!

Again thanks everyone for your help!

OH YEAH, great everything -- pics, girls, frocks....excuse me I have to go into the atelier now and SEW UP some of these delicious ideas...

Wow!! Great dresses, pics and models!

The novelty print thread dress looks like a rayon, rayon/acetate to me also. Fabulous print!!

I checked your auctions and they look great, just have a
couple of things to mention - on the polka dot dress auction
when I went to "click to enlarge" the pics, they do not
enlarge (I did not check the other auction pics).

Also, you may want to look into using FCMI rates for mailing rather than Global Priority for International shipping.

Good luck - you are off to a fabulous start!

Thanks again everyone for looking! I appreciate everyone being so helpful! So far more "tire kickers" than bidders but hopefully browsing will turn to bidding later this week. We've got one bid - just need to keep them coming! I know that while I've been selling purses for over a year most people wait until they come to the top of the que to start bidding or before they even see them to put them on watch... and being the "snyping" type I certainly understand the wait!

Sue: That's odd about the photos - they are working for me just fine. I asked hubby-to-be (who is a web designer and does all our stuff) and he said they were working for him. He did accidentally load the same photo twice on there so maybe you were trying to do it while he was working on it or photobucket was down... what broswer do you use just so he can double check at work tomorrow?

Mary Jane: I was wondering about acetate too solely b/c of the sheen and it has an acetatey feel to it - reminds of some of those scarves you find w/ the great pattern that you don't want to buy because they're acetate! I wasn't aware that a rayon-acetate cross exists in the world! Of course I should have known better. That dress though definitely has the highest number of watchers so far so hopefully it will do well!

Thanks again everyone! This is so much fun - I hope I can be this much help to someone else sometime! :)
