i have been having a lovely afternoon going through some new arrivals, and this printed hessian panel has really stumped me, this hessian print is only 40 inches wide including the selvage, soemone must have cleared an old relatives house out and took them to an amenity site that we have the contract with. there was a huge age span in what was there... including demask table cloth dated 1874 old victorian aprons etc

The furnishing fabric is probably cretonne or linen union. It could be block printed and these chintz designs were popular during the Arts & Crafts Movement - approximately 1880-1910. However, it could be later and may be from the 1930's.

You might eventually find the design through research. What length is the piece?

its 128 inches/326 cms

thank you i really do appreciate the info, where would i be able to reasearch/find the design

there were some things from the 1880's and some things right up to the 70's,

there is some material with wamsutta otc div. of m. lowenstein corp, which i am rearsearching at mo...

so would this furnishing fabric be used for chairs due to the narrow width of it?

This type of fabric is called Union Cloth in the US if it's a cotton/linen blend, although it could be printed on pure linen. The design is based on a very old motif called The Tree of Life, which dates back to Assyria in ancient times. The Tree of Life patern was popular during the Elizabethan era; it was used a lot in India and is still being made today. The design had a more "stylized" look during the Arts and Crafts movement than your piece has. Often the pattern is worked with wool yarn which makes it crewel work. Your piece was probably intended to be a drapery panel or perhaps a throw or "toss" pillow, but this pattern is also used for upholstery. It would be used on a Wing Chair, for example.

Modern fabric is 54" wide in the U.S., but some is narrower and some is wider. It would be very hard to date this because it's something that you could still find today in a traditional print line; although I do not think yours is new - it's hard to saw how old it is.
