this dress along with the other ones are off to the dry cleaners.. this afternoon as they are some marks etc.. and a very distinctive sell ...lol...
as you look at the dress there is a pocket to the left of the dress just under the belt which does not show up very well in the photos .
a lot of the other clothes that i have had from this place have been from the 40's right through to the 70's .....personal clothing of the owner and stock for sale....

but i am a bit lost with this one.......you hel p would be appreciated.....

thanks chezmov.... i was thinking that..... the code on the label was 6670.. as some times the coding sometimes incorperates the date.......
just out of interest on the back of the label the original price is written which was £7.9.9 which if it was in the 50's was a lot of money ( i think)

wonder how much that would work out into today's money and value..lol...

dress update.......

i tooke some items to the dry cleaners..... but they would not clean the silk dress above..... said it was too delicate....due to the age etc......

i have given them another silk mix dress which is far worse than the silk dress above..... as a 'guniea pig' to see what they can do.......

so any suggestions on how to clean the above dress.... its very fine ..not lined.......and has general storage marks/dirt smells a bit and also has some small 'age brown spots'

they also told me not to steam it as this will also leave marks ?

It looks 50s to me too. Are the spots really bad? I have actually used the Mr. Clean eraser on some items. Very gently dabbing it without wetting the sponge too much. Sometimes it works and other times not. Blow drying it or hanging it out in the sun.

I don't quite know why steaming would hurt it...unless the steamer trickles water onto it.

Mine just did that on a silk dress the other day, the same dress that gave me 2 steam burns on my arm right before my vacation a couple of weeks ago. The dress is bad news I'm afraid.

thanks poppysvintageclothing...... the 'age spots' are quite small really so could have been worth the gamble on trying to get them out....

i had a new steamer on thursday.... and used that to try and gently steam it.... and yep it dribbled over it so to speak......i have got another one coming tomorrow ..which is far better ( better be the price i am paying ..lol....) and this one is going back....

it is a pitty as it is a lovely dress.....nothing fancy..... but quietly chic.....so to speak....

You could attempt to hand wash in cold water and lay flat to dry. Might shrink though. Do not wash the belt - that's bad news.

thanks hollis......will try that....will wait to see what happens to the 'guinea pig' dress ...and then have a go at hand washing......

Yeah, it should be ok in cold water with gentle soaps (baby shampoo is good) since it's not lined. If it had an acetate lining it would loose shape too much.

If you have a beach towel handy, you can lay it out flat on that and roll it up to extract water. Then lay it across another dry towel or two sweater drying racks laid side by side. This is where that dining table comes in handy!

Your DC sounds like a chicken! The steam thing is more for spots from water. Once dry, you can steam, just make sure your steamer isn't sputtering, stay back from the fabric a bit instead of running it on the surface.

My thoughts, exactly! Is there another around you could try?

Is the dress a creamy taupe, as it appears on my monitor? I've had pretty good luck spot cleaning white and solid, light colored fabrics, even delicate ones like silk, by dabbing on hydrogen peroxide with a Q-tip and putting it in the sunshine.

With silk, I'm just really careful to use the HP very, very sparingly, so it doesn't pucker (and I don't need to worry about color fade).

hi.. ues its like a cream taupe colour.... the belt is a sade or 2 darker than the dress.......

i have other dry cleaners around..... so as you say might be worth trying another one..... i used the same one as i used for with a 50's dress which to be honest was in far worse state that these silk dresses.....and apart from some ghost markings where the age spots were on the lining it came out fantastic....( well the second time i went back ...as they put more stains in the first time )
