Hi there, I am trying to date this suspender belt. Can anyone help?

I would really like to know when the registered trademark became designated by the symbol: ® (the circled "R") - in the UK?

Thanks to all!

Hi littlebluecottage,

I think your suspender belt is fairly modern: 1970s or more recent. Unusually it opens on the side, I haven't seen that before - usually it's centre back like a bra.

A few questions: is there any more information on the labels, eg care instructions, country of origin? What are the words below "Cotton" that we can't see?

I actually had a similar suspender belt way back in 1965-66 when I was a bit younger and living in the UK. I've come up against this trademark question before. The registered "R" trademark symbol was introduced in the US sometime either in the late 1950's or before 1963 and there is a reference to its use by other "foreign countries." but it's not clear if Britain was one of the countries. Here's the reference;

I think you'd be safe to say this suspender belt dates from the 1960's. By the late 1960's tights or pantyhose had become more popular.

vertugarde, I thought '60s originally but a few things said more modern to me: the suspenders are plastic not metal, the labelling has polyester and nylon - I find that '60s ones are usually nylon or poly, not often both and then tend to use patent names like bri-nylon and tetron or dacron. The sizing is 36/92, I'd expect an earlier one to just have 36 rather than both systems.

I'm hoping to hear that it will have care instructions or country of origin that might make it a bit easier to date. Although most ladies stopped wearing suspenders in the '60s, there was still a market and they were still being made, eg, I started wearing suspenders in the late '70s and this style looks similar to some of the ones I saw then.

Good point Nicole re the sizing and the fibre content. Hmm... I assumed the suspenders were coated metal. Could be later then.

Thank you ladies, The info on the back has the hand wash symbol only. There is also written: Hand Wash, Do not machine wash, Made in Gt. Britain

Also, the last component on the front of the label is 5% elastane.

There is also boning in this belt, and the clips are plastic.

I thought 1970s.

I still wonder about the trademark though, as it is a UK item, I wonder when the ® was brought in to replace the REGD. ??

I can't seem to find a reference to GB in that link....

:clueless:

thanks for the extra info, I'm going to update my dating to '80s due to the boning and elastane. I'm curious about "Gt Britain" though. I seem to remember that they stopped using that and now adays it's "UK"?? Any one know? It might help narrow it down.

I used to have a skimpier black lace set like that in about ooh, '88. Despite the boning it wasn't very good at holding my stockings up - but yours looks a bit sturdier.

Excelsior has been going in the UK for years, the factory is still going, it's in Derbyshire and called Coopers of Ashbourne.

Anyways, yours can date anywhere from the late 1970's- early 1980's it's NOT 60's at all. I often come across these ones with the same labels and plastic stocking clips.

It's nice living in the Midlands as most of the corset farctories were around here so you often come across many examples of the various UK manufacturers :)

Thanks for that info Lei. My suspender belt did not have the boning and I'm pretty sure the suspender hook and buttons were coated metal and the button a sort of rubber. Don't recall the fibre content other than it was cotton. This label has a metric conversion and in Britain the Metrication Board was established in 1969 (the policy was implemented in 1965). From an industry perspective products looked to conform with metrication from approximately that time I believe- so late 70's early 80's does seem to fit.

I think we'd all be interested to know a bit more about Corsetry patents and trademarks since they were very common on these garments. From your experience Lei do you have a timeline for trademarks and care labels for the UK that you could share with us?
