I don't often come across garments that confuse me this much (there have definitely been a few), but this one has me stumped. Input and insight would be most welcome! :)

  • Made of silk chiffon (no tag, but silk chiffon has that "feel". I did also compare it with another dress that is silk chiffon to be sure.
  • Metal zipper in back. The quality of the zipper feels very mid-century to me, it has that firm feeling of earlier zippers.
  • Very unique architectural detail at the bust, that I would normally associate with 70's - 90's garments. Combined with the above info, though, I'm at a loss. ?
  • Not a single tag or label.
  • Very well made, and the larger hem on the skirt is similar to the way many 40's - 60's silk chiffon dresses that I've found were hemmed. Dress measures 42" in length.
Thoughts, fellow vintage lovers?

It is hard to tell without seeing it on a person, especially since it is black. I really can't see the details or shape very well as it is just hanging there.

From what I can tell, I would say early 1960s. It also looks rather short waisted, perhaps dressmaker made for a petite woman?

It looks mid century to me, I have late 70s dresses with similar bust treatment, but I think they are a throwback to this original style.

I think you could describe it as having a pleated petal bodice. It looks 1950's to me. Perhaps with a shortened skirt?

Thanks for the replies everyone! I had another vintage friend in today, and she came to the same conclusion (mid century) after inspection! It's so nice to have affirmation when in doubt, much appreciated (her and you guys!). Thanks again! :)
