Help Me Pick A Mannequin, please...

Well, with the addition of my new stock from this past weekend, I've come to the realization that I have to take the next step and upgrade to a mannequin. My dressmakers dummy is about 50 years old and is starting to show it. I'm finding it's harder and harder to get it to hold it's shape and pieces have begun to pull out. I considered putting an ad in the paper to find a used one but in the end I decided to buy one online and be done with it. What do you think about these choices?

These all come from a seller who seems to have the best feedback combared to some of the others out there. I prefer the ones with molded hair.

This one is headless but I like the position of the arms and body. It would be nice to have a head for hats but is it a good trade-off??

Any feedback or advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks,

l love #2..late 80's???? if buying only on el would buy that one....if you can afford it buy all three!! #3 is a good generic model for those other decaded you couldnt use #2 for....
good luck...

I bought this one from charlie6515 but I don't think he has anything like what you want. He has 100% positive feedback and great service. Packed well, too.

This is my new teenage mannequin. These are not very good pictures. They were taken hurriedly at my office.

Another vote for #2. The stance with the straight arms slightly away from the body, and the
way the legs are positioned not too far apart will give you more versatility in what "she" can wear.
#1 the legs are spread too far for pencil/slim skirts and the arms are so close to the body that coats
would be a bear to display.

I like the pose on #3 too, but I'm partial to heads :)

Thanks for all your help. Because of limited space, I definitely can only get one. I also need one that will do most eras as the manni I get will need to do everything from 40's to 80's. Having said this, do you think it would be best to get the headless one and then invest in a mannequin bust later for displaying hats and such? I sometimes feel like mannequin heads & hair can be kind of distracting, so not having a head will not bother me too much. My main need is having legs and arms so my buyers can get a really good feel for how the garment hangs. So what say you now??? I also found one more listing that is a little bit more subtle in the face.

Thanks everyone!

Carrie, I think I would go with the headless one then. The last one is white and will not take good pictures. I purchased a head form last year for about $35.00 with shipping and everything so that can always come later.

I have always admired Harriet's headless girl.:)

... it can be distracting if you have one that doesn't fit with the clothing era.

I agree with Carrie about the distracting heads, but I wanted the option of placing hats on the manniquins, so what I do generally is just crop the mannequin head out of my pictures. That gives me the flexibility I need if I want to use a hat.

Also, I don't know if you bought a mannequin yet, but I used pacrim for two purchases and found him to be honest and helpful. One mannequin arrived with a smashed head and I took a photo of it (still in the box), sent the photo to him, and within 24 hours another was on its way to me. I offered several times to send the damaged one back, but he insisted I keep it.

I should note, however, that the forearms on his female mannequins are a bit disproportional. The arms are, I think, unusually long and a bit too big between the wrist and elbow. Other than that I am very happy with the purchases.

Good luck
Lynne

Hi, Thanks for checking in on my mannequin process!
Yes, I did get my mannequin. I'll post a picture of it. I'm really really pleased with the way it looks and I can already see an increase in watchers and bidders.

Lynne, That is a good idea about cropping out the heads. I probably should have just done that. But...I did get the one I ordered and I think it will work. I am having problems with it though. The torso does not attach to the bottom correctly. In order to take the photos I have now, I had to tape the two pieces together. His communication with me has been good and he has said that he is sending me a new one but I am still waiting. Keep your fingers crossed!
