Hello,

I recently purchased this shawl at an estate sale. It is very beautiful and in excellent condition. I think the black fabric is rayon. Do you have an opinion as to age? I have pictured the embroidery on the right side and wrong side.

Thank you!

That has beautiful colors! It can be difficult to date these, especially from just a photo. I can make a guess that it is more on the contemporary side of the 20th century, post WWII. The fringe on your shawl is plain and straight and the antique shawls usually have more intricate fringes with varying degrees of fancy braiding, tassels, thicker fringes, or longer fringes, etc. I just get a more modern era vibe from your shawl. It is lovely regardless of age.

I will wait to see what others think.

Thank you, Barbara. I wondered whether it was common for the fringe to be on all four sides? Would that indicate that is to be used as more of a decorative object, such as a piano shawl?
