Help needed in identifying fur?

Hi,
Im an Australian passionate about all things vintage, especially clothing and this is my first post/comment.
Reading these forums has taght me a lot, and they also provide some great entertainment! Soo many people with the same obsession. Anyway, I'm hoping that someone can help me identify the fur on this jacket. It is I'm guessing its a 50's or 60's with the pleated detail on the satin type fabric lining on the inside back neck. The true colour is the muted grey, light brown in the first pic. It is very soft and seems to have a feathery overlay that looks like scalloped edges. I cant work out how to add a 2nd pic, so will have to add them as separate posts :(
Thanks heaps in advance,
Katie

i think you should be able to just copy n paste as many pictures as you want - am i right?

Cheers Katie and welcome to the boards! I think your stole is 50s or older and I'm sure someone will be along to add their opinion on both date and type of fur. Do you have a picture of the lining? And is there a label on the lining or inside pocket (if any)? If you're lucky the label on the inside pocket may have a date.

hello :-) i am no fur expert or novice for that matter but just wanted to say I Love to stole and I personlly would be shocked if it was oppossum for.. it looks much softer thatn that...

but as I said I suck at furs lol... mainly cause I avoided them my whole life until I started buying vintage clothes from estates in bulk., then I ended up with a bunch loland didn't guess a single one right yet lol!

I think it's '50s but can't help with the type of fur, sorry. It looks like lots of small pelts though, so whatever it is, it's a small animal.

Where in Aus are you? In Melbourne there is a vintage fur specialist in Chapel St called "Linda Black". I always take difficult furs to them for identification as my knowledge isn't strong in this area.

Hi to all u lovely people who have replied and given suggestions! Wow!
Firstly, it has no label, has a lighter coloured satin lining and is in puuurfect condition!
It's very, very soft and nothing like the possums that we have in Australia but the possum, opussum in the US might be different. Its the feathered, scalloped edge that gets me as obviously it's sewn that way on the hem, but it overlaps like that all the way through.
Having just had another look at it, re small or large animal, the only seams I can feel are in the shoulders for the shaping, even tho its tricky to feel as it has a cotton wadding between the fur and the lining. Also, will get another pic as it looks like it has a ridge of 'spine'down the centre back. Its also quite lightweight, its the most exquisite fur piece Ive ever come across which is why I'm really keen to know what it is! :)
Im in Perth, the most isolated city in the entire world, so not even sure we have a fur shop here, but good suggestion.
Thanks so much to everyone, its very welcoming!

Hi Katie,

I don't think there are any fur shops in Perth but do you know Memory Lane in Mount Lawley, Beaufort St? Gayle has been trading in vintage for over thirty years, she can probably identify the fur for you.

Australian possums are very different from the ones found in the rest of the world - and as far as I know, aren't usually prized for their pelts. It could be (US) possum.

Further thoughts

Thanks all once again!
Have checked out pages of images of NZ possum and I dont think so, its too sleek and I dont theink possums have any definition on their backs, seems possums were introduced from Australia anyway so cant be too different to the ones I know.
Looks like I'm going to have to take a drive across town to chat with Gayle as kindly suggested by Nicole, who having read her 'blog' page has me green with envy on the amount of 'events' on in Melbourne! Oh groan, Perth is just a little town in the desert!
Will post any more info as I find it, and keep reading the goss!
Thanks heaps,
Katie

Hi,
Just to solve the mystery, apparently this is GREY SQUIRREL! Who would have guessed!!! Thanks Nicole for the referral to Mt Lawley but didnt have any luck there.
Thanks heaps,
Katie

I'm in too late, but first want to say that your fur is lovely! And I had thought squirrel, too (though I'm awful at identifying furs, I have a squirrel stole--in a different color--and the fur on yours looks so much like mine) as well. Beautiful design!
