i have been rumaging through some of the stuff that i've got to see if there is anything suitable for putting on the blog.

and i came across this beautiful velvet hand made jacket....and i just cant date it at all...i think its been re-lned in the passed...the designs.. is a gold thread whick has then been carefully placed and then sewen to make the design.. so this must have taken hours of work....and then they have sewn coloured thread in between to add the colour...the end design on the arms.. has been done on a seperate peice of velvet and added on if it could be dated properly.. i thought it might be suitable for the blogg

i also unpicked a bit of the lining to see what was under neath...i picked the sleeve part and there is hessiun on the back of the detained work.. so this must have made it easiler to work..
also the hook and eye fastner at the neck looks old the black/borwn

When I looked at the jacket earlier, my first thought was that wasn't "European" dress. I think it came from the mid-east or even India. The decorative work is probably very distinctive and easily recognize if you know these regions.

Recently I asked an Indian friend about a sari I have hoping he could help me date it based on the design and thread. He said it wasn't possible to use the designs because they did not belong to a particular period.

I have a 70s caftan with decorative cord couched on it and an older vest with gold threads couched on. Couching is a technique for attaching decorative yarns, cords, beads etc. A fine thread is used to sew over the decorative threads. In some of the photos, there appear to be couching threads. (I have seen couching threads in contrast colors as part of the design.)

It's a neat jacket and I agree with Claire that it's most likely Middle Esatern or Indian. Although there are also Eastern European and Greek garments that come to mind..............

Which also makes it harder to date. The hook looks like it has some age on it.

My best guess is early to mid 20th C.

thanks peeps....in a way i am glad its also baffling you guys .....as now i dont feel so naive about it all....lol.....

it is in such excellent condition....that i did think it was mdern.. but with old hook and eye fastener used.... but there the cotton nused to sew them on and the detail around the edging.. has got that old ingrained look and feel... you what i mean.. its hard to explain....

maybe one day if i go to a vintage fair and meet up with some of you.. i will bring it to show you.....as some times you need to see and feel the item.....

as realistically i want to sell it.....but as i dont want to give mis-information.... it will go on the back of the clothes rail....
