First, I love that hat. That shape always appeals to me. You are correct, it dates to the very early 1950s. While there is no specific name for the shape that comes to my mind, I have seen a few similar hats described as matador style. I think the term is a good one for your hat, as Spanish styles were influential at the time. I would call it a stylized matador, or adapted matador shape.
