Hello!

I would need some help confirming a date on these two purses.

They are both beaded with small glass beads, the blue one has also larger glass beads, both lined in silk faille.
The multicolored one has an inscription on the zipper pull that says "Victor Czechoslovakia", no label.
The blue one has a label that says "Comolli". Provenance seems to be Northern Italy for both.

The lady that sells them says they are both early '20s ('21 - '22) but I am inclining towards early 30s on both (or even late 30s for the blue one). My opinion is that the multicolored one is handmade.

This is just for my edification - I am wrong more often than not (vintage is just a hobby for me and I am still learning...) but I am really curious as to what your opinion might be!

thanks !
Astrid

I don't know a lot about purses, however I am positive the top one is at least late 1930s and was made in Czechoslovakia ( I have a few that are similar and one that is the exact same shape with same type of zipper etc. was in a woman's trousseau from 1938.

I think the blue one is postwar, probably late 1950s (you don't see those really big beads before), and that blue colour is typical of the late 1950s too.

Nice purses, but definitely not 1920s. The closures are wrong for that decade. I was going to say later 30s, maybe 40s on the zippered purse and 50s on the frame purse with the twist knob closure, so hey - I was in the ball park!

more info... does she have a point?

Hi,

...and thanks!

So it seems my instinct might be right after all!
All the vintage books and forums and websites I drolled over in the past year are paying off! :cheer:

The lady that has these bags says she "would venture to date the blue bag even earlier than '21-'22, around 1920, because of the way the beads are sewn - in a "swirling" pattern - and because of the large crystal beads."

She also says that the "over the wrist" handle of the blue bag is typical for '21-'22.
I always thought that this type of handle was more widespread in the 40's? I have seen lots of 40s bags with this handle, and some of the late 30s, but none of the early 20s.

Regarding the other bag, according to her, metalic zippers like on this bag were very widespread in purses since around 1916 until mid 30s, and the colors - black, red, green (besides orange) were very fashionable exactly in 1922.

I wonder where she gets all this very precise info from?
In my country, the interest for vintage clothing has just started a few years ago, so there's none of the long years of experience you have!

Do you think she has a point?
