Help w/Dating a Dress and a Mystery

Hi,

I picked up this dress today that I need some help with dating - a friend recommended I post here as she said she gets wonderful information from these forums. I am pretty good with 50s forward but I think this COULD be earlier.

Here is some info: What is weird (if that is right word) is that it has two tags on outside. The one on the sleeve says "Woolco" on it but research says they didnt open til 1962. The tag doesn't look like it really belongs on the dress - it is attached in a very strange manner and something seems off about it. The tag on the back metal zipper has information on it that actually matches up with a tag on the inside of the dress. The tags provide little information - Style on the outside tag and Order No. and Style on the inside. There is no maker or designer label to be found. Again, zipper is metal and the dress has lace that runs completely around bust area from front to back and also both cuffs are same lace. Sleeves are sheer and overlay material is sheer. I am not so good with material but the skirt underlay material has a taffeta or acetate feel.

This dress look so familar in some way but I just can't find anything similar on internet to help me get an idea. I bought for a song and the woman said a "dealer" told her it was 1920s but I don't much trust when I can't meet the person. Anyway - here are pics - will quit rambling.

The Woolco thing makes me wonder about it being a "re-creation" piece however, the zipper and make of dress confuse me a little.

Thank you all - I appreciate any help.

Hi,

Looks very mid 1960's to me, with a sort of a nod to the Victorian Edwardian era. It looks very much like a dress I have from 1965, and the lace and drop waist is the same also. I called it my "Edwardian private school girl's dress". I don't know for sure, but it just reminds me of the Victorian Edwardian revival dresses my older sister wore in the mid 60's when she went to a dance or dress up event. There was a romantic revival in teenager's dresses then, with lace cuffs, leg o mutton sleeves, velvets, empire waists, high collars, and drop waists etc...and the style and fabric fit right in there. I can see the 1920's influences, but it is 1960's for sure.

I agree it's '60's. I think it's a little later in the decade - '67 - '68. Maybe as early as '66. Definitely a nod to the '20's!

Thank you so much ladies! I knew something was off...I couldn't put my finger on it but something just wasn't screaming 20s to me.

I picked up another dress with this one...am going to post, hope it is okay. It is also confusing me.
