These are two more hats that I'm trying to help date for my mother-in-law who purchased them at an antique store. The red one I believe is 40's. It is felt, labeled "Edith Hats" and has half a mark of some kind in the fold of the inside. The second hat is fur? and velvet with a black satin bow in back. The netting is in decent condition (one hole). I think it would be 50's (I read it was a popular style for 50 's wedding trouseau) but what's throwing me off is the absolutely pristine condition of the velvet on the inside (right photo). No tags. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hi,

The red hat is such a classic sporty style...it could be late 1930's, or even early 1950's. What does it say on the inside stampings of the felt? Is it wool or fur-felt/velour? Again, without having it in hand it is hard to date it exactly as it is such a popular style that was made in several decades. The ridge along the one side may be hint of it being more 1930s or early 40s.

The black velvet ring or halo hat was popular circa 1960. It appears to be ermine tails, but I cannot see the tips...so it may be mink tails.
The fact that it is, as you call it, in pristine condition has no bearing on its age or dating.

I agree with Barbara, and I think your first hat might be more in the '30s because of the lovely deco font on the label. The second hat, I agree with late '50s to early '60s but Barbara is much better at this than I am! I think I can see a little black tail on one of the furs and I also agree that condition is no indication of age. I have a late Victorian ensemble that I thought must be a costume at first because the condition is so good.

Thank you sooooo much for your replies ladies!! I think the red hat is wool but I'm not positive. The only markings on the entire hat are those shown in the photos (and the one stamped on there is cut in half due to the gathering of the "ridge") On the second hat the fur is pure white, there is no black. Does that mean it is most likely mink tail? Thanks again for all your knowledge!!!

Kim,

The inside of the red hat looks as if it might say "imported". That almost always indicates a fur-felt, as wool felts were not commonly imported into the USA, but were made here in one of the major hat factories. Either way it is a very sweet and stylish hat.

I can't be sure on the fur tails....my best guess is mink or something dyed to resemble mink tails.
