Hi all, I found this dress back in 2006 in a Goodwill. I always thought it was probably 1940s, but would love anyone's better-informed thoughts. Very sadly I gave it away or sold it a few years ago, every time I think of it I kick myself :(
I canot tell without seeing the hem, seams, feel the fabric myself... I think it could be 40s but could also see it as 70s too. Hard to tell. Sweet dress.
Thanks all for your input. Very sadly I gave the dress away or sold it a few years ago. So unfortunately I can't investigate or take more photos. As I mentioned the buttons seemed older than 1970s but I suppose vintage buttons could have been used. It always seemed to me to be homemade but hard to tell. There were no labels.
Edit: one detail I forgot to mention that I'm not sure shows clearly in the photos is the buttons fasten with self-fabric loops, not buttonholes. Not sure if that helps.
Thanks all! I feel somewhat less bad having given it away now that I know it's not as old as I thought, though, I still wish I'd kept it. You all are a gold mine of knowledge.
Guided by all your suggestions I tried a search for "1970s does 1940s dress" on gem.app and came across a few that have a lot of similarities to my dress. Nothing identical but similar details and overall silhouette. Thought maybe anyone else looking to identify this type of dress might find it helpful.
