60s... and I'm going to test the fabric but I like to start out with a "probably it is this" because I'm not too good at the testing. Is this some sort of thick silk? The print is on one side and the back is shiny. Pretty thick with slubs in the front and the back is slick feeling. What is it?

Silk Shantung is a dupionni type of silk that comes from the Shantung Prov. of China.

Doupioni is reeled from double cocoons nested together. The threads are uneven and irregular. Italian Doupioni is the finest, followed by Chinese Doupioni and Indian Doupioni. Doupioni is also seen in man-made fibers such as polyester, acetate and referred to as Doupionini. Silk Doupioni is most often found in men’s and women’s fine suits and also dresses in lighter weight silk Doupioni.

Lovely fabric and print! Mary's info on the silk is spot on. Many people use the terms Dupionni Silk and Shangtung silk interchangeably because normally you can't tell "where" it comes from just by looking at it (though I suppose someone who's a top-notch expert in fabrics might know the differences in regional silks). So, either term is properly descriptive, but Dupioni is more accuately inclusive...

In the 70s, when I worked for the Singer Company, there were some woven poly shantungs out on the market that were so good you'd swear they were real silk....
