Hi everyone,

I need help with dating sweater from GANT please. Care tag states it is "100% MERINO EXTRA FINE LAMBSWOOL MADE IN ITALY". Also, I would like to know name of the weave pattern and any info on about it. Thanks! P.S. how much would one have to pay to get a sweater of this quality...I love it!

That is essentially still a cable knit albeit a complicated one because you have to keep moving the yarn over like you would with wicker to get that under over basketweave effect.
It has been said before that garments with S/M/L labelling tend to be 90's onwards.

Thank you very much for your input :)

That's a lovely sweater. The sweater is a very classic style, and while it could be as recent as the 1990's, or even 2011 - sweaters were sold in sizes S/M/L since the 1950's. I found some for sale in the "Everyday Fashions of the Fifties" as Pictured in Sear's Cataglogs in the late 1950's. I think that sizes like XXXL are very recent, but S/M/L have been around for awhile. The Gant Company has been around since the 1940's and was primarily known for shirts. If you Google Gant there is a lot of information about the company available - and there are a lot of sweaters available online and probably in stores near you to get an idea of cost.

- I love your knowledge -
Thank you Linn :) you are a GREAT help to all of us here!

If it helps, that typeface on the label was very popular in the late 90s. Being someone who has spent a lot of my life working with typefaces, I actually find it easier to date my vintage clothing by the typeface on the label, than by the item itself.
