Howdy.

I'm just assuming that these are Mexican. If you know otherwise, please inform me!

I'm wondering if anyone has any dating suggestions for these... they have that "timeless" quality that I have a hard time figuring out.

The first one is a clutch:

And then while we're discussing tooled purses I figured I might as well ask about this one, too.
At first I was thinking maybe this was a camera case... but the strap also converts into half the size... just a smidge longer than you'd see on a handbag.

These are nice!!! The only ones I have had like this I dated to the 70s.

I don't know if I'd assume they're Mexican - they look to me like they coud just as easily be South Western, especially with the whipstitched (?) lacing - something I associate more with Western/cowboy leathergoods.

You know I'm not the best on dating - it's hit or miss :) - but these look 50's to me, maybe earlier.

I like the 1st one especially. I'd put Cowgirl in the title - it seems to be a good, frequently-searched keyword.

I'm sure you're right, Carolyn... I just always get the phrase "Mexican tooled leatheer" stuck in my head so that now whenever I see tooled leather I automatically think "Mexican!" LOL!

I keep leaning towards an earlier date on that clutch, too... I'm not sure why. But I LOVE it and it's a fantastic size.. not too big.. not too small.

I'm still totally puzzled by that 2nd one, though. Heck.. if it was made for tourists anywhere I suppose it could have been made at any time. Maybe I'll just stick with calling that one "vintage".:USING:

Mexico is still well reknowned for the passed on tradition of leather working. Some folks with the skills most likely migrated northward to the american southwest and contributed to what we associate as SWestern culture., as of course part of it used to be Mexico. (and native culture there had strong ties to the south).

You very well could be right about the first one being more southwestern with the multiple colors and the monogramming (looks more like monogramming than a signature as the letters are too stylized).

I have seen tooled purses from the 40s-70s mostly. surely they are still made but in different forms. the turnlock on the clutch looks later rather than earlier for its sparkly pristine lookingness and i am not used to seeing silver tones on types of things like that.

Darn-I'd like to have a bag, but can't get your site up on Opera or Firefox. Please let me know when they're listed. I'd especially like a shoulder bag (crossbody strap type).

Hmmmm.. yes.. it should be there. I use Firefox myself and I can see it fine.

Anyone else having problems with those links? I'd hate to find out that a huge crosssection can't get to me! WAH!

Try going through the "front door"

then find your way to purses :)

Lemme know if you have any difficulties that way.
